The Best Time of Year to Paint Your House Exterior in Iowa

Living in the Quad Cities means dealing with some of the most unpredictable weather in the country. Hot, humid summers. Cold, wet springs. Winters that can go from 60 degrees to a blizzard in 48 hours. All of that matters when you're planning an exterior paint job.
The Sweet Spot: Late Spring and Early Fall
The ideal window for exterior painting in Iowa is late May through June, and then again in September through mid-October. During these periods, temperatures are typically between 50°F and 85°F — the range most exterior paints require to cure properly — and humidity is manageable.
Paint applied outside of that temperature range doesn't bond the way it should. Too cold and it won't dry right. Too hot and it can blister or dry too fast, leaving an uneven finish that won't last.
Why Summer Isn't Always Ideal
A lot of homeowners assume summer is the best time to paint — and it's fine if conditions cooperate. But July and August in Davenport regularly hit 90°F+ with high humidity, which slows drying time and can cause paint to sag. Direct afternoon sun on a south-facing wall is another problem. Good painters will schedule work on those sides early in the morning.
Spring: Watch the Rain
April and early May can work, but you're gambling with rain. Exterior surfaces need to be completely dry before painting — any moisture trapped under fresh paint will cause it to peel within a season. If you're planning a spring job, give yourself flexibility in the schedule.
What About Fall?
September and October are often the best months in the Quad Cities for exterior work. Temperatures are comfortable, humidity drops, and you're not fighting summer storms. The main risk is waiting too long — once you get into November, temperatures get unpredictable fast.
Can You Paint in Winter?
For interior work, absolutely — winter is a great time to get interior rooms done since contractors are less busy and scheduling is easier. For exterior painting, we generally recommend waiting until spring unless temperatures are consistently above 50°F.
