Interior Paint Finishes Explained: Flat, Eggshell, Satin, and Semi-Gloss

Picking a paint color is the fun part. Picking the right finish is the part that actually determines how your walls hold up — and it's the step most homeowners skip. The truth is, the same gorgeous color can look completely different (and perform completely differently) depending on whether it's flat, eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss.
Here's a simple breakdown of each finish, what it's best for, and how to match it to the rooms in your home.

Why Finish Matters as Much as Color
Paint sheen affects three things:
Durability — how well the paint stands up to scrubbing, moisture, and everyday wear
Appearance — how much light the surface reflects, and how forgiving (or unforgiving) it is of wall imperfections
Cleanability — how easily marks, fingerprints, and splatters wipe off
Lower sheens hide flaws better but clean up less easily. Higher sheens are tougher and easier to wipe down, but they show every dent, drywall seam, and roller mark. Once you know that trade-off, choosing a finish gets a lot easier.
Flat (Matte)
Look: No shine at all — a soft, smooth, non-reflective finish.
Durability: Lowest of the group. Flat paint doesn't hold up well to scrubbing or moisture.
Best for: Bedrooms, formal living rooms, dining rooms, and ceilings — low-traffic spaces where walls aren't getting touched, bumped, or wiped down often. Flat finish is also the most forgiving on walls with texture issues or repair patches, since it doesn't reflect light in a way that draws attention to imperfections.
Avoid in: Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, kids' rooms, or anywhere hands, moisture, or grease are a factor.
Eggshell
Look: A slight, low-luster sheen — think of the soft glow of an actual eggshell.
Durability: A step up from flat. It can handle occasional light cleaning and is more resistant to moisture than flat paint.
Best for: Living rooms, family rooms, and bedrooms where you want a bit more resilience than flat but still want a soft, warm look on the walls. It's one of the most popular all-purpose finishes for main living areas because it balances looks and practicality.
Avoid in: Bathrooms with heavy moisture, or areas that need frequent scrubbing.
Satin
Look: A noticeable, velvety sheen with more reflectivity than eggshell.
Durability: Good moisture and stain resistance, and it wipes clean much more easily than flat or eggshell.
Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, mudrooms, and kids' bedrooms — anywhere you need walls that can handle steam, splashes, fingerprints, and regular cleaning. Satin has become the go-to finish for high-traffic living spaces because it holds up without looking overly glossy.
Watch for: Satin shows roller marks and surface imperfections more than flatter finishes, so proper wall prep matters more here.
Semi-Gloss
Look: A shiny, reflective finish that catches the light.
Durability: Highly durable and moisture-resistant. Easiest of all the finishes to wipe down and scrub.
Best for: Trim, doors, window frames, cabinets, and bathrooms with heavy moisture exposure. Semi-gloss is the standard choice for trim work because it makes woodwork pop against wall colors and stands up to the constant contact doors and trim get.
Avoid on: Large wall areas, unless you specifically want a bold, high-shine look — semi-gloss will highlight every wall flaw.
Quick Reference by Room

Kids' Rooms | Satin |
Trim, Doors, Cabinets | Semi-Gloss |
High-Traffic Areas | Satin or Semi-Gloss |
The Bottom Line
There's no single "best" finish — just the right finish for the right surface. As a general rule: the more traffic, moisture, or mess a space sees, the higher the sheen you'll want. Save flat and eggshell for the quiet rooms, and let satin and semi-gloss do the heavy lifting where your home gets used the most.
Still not sure which finish fits your project? That's exactly the kind of thing a professional painter can walk through with you room by room — factoring in your home's lighting, wall condition, and how each space actually gets used day to day.
